WHAT IS RSS?

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". It is an XML-based format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Internet. CGIRB uses the RSS 2.0 specification.

HOW CAN I USE RSS?

The "CGIRB Forms" RSS feed enables you to receive notification when a new form is posted on our website, including a direct link to the new form for quick, easy access.

A number of free and commercial RSS readers are available for download. It is recommended you set the "CGIRB Forms" RSS feed to check for updates once per day, more often is not necessary. There are several ways to access the "CGIRB Forms" RSS feed:

  • Feedreader and RssReader are both installable applications that are available for free. (RssReader requires Microsoft .NET Framework.) Other RSS readers may be found by Google.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 shows RSS Feed in IE7 in the main toolbar to the right of the tabs when it detects an RSS feed on the web page. Simply click RSS Feed in IE7 in the toolbar or RSS Feed on the web page and IE 7 will display the RSS feed and options for it (the built in RSS reader has minimal options). You may also right click on RSS Feed and choose "Copy Shortcut" and paste it into your RSS reader software.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or older - Right click on RSS Feed and choose "Copy Shortcut". Paste that link into your RSS reader software where it asks for the URL of the RSS feed.
  • Microsoft Outlook 2007 can be used to read RSS feeds. (more information on RSS and Outlook 2007).
  • Microsoft Outlook 2003 or older - There are commercial solutions for RSS readers that integrate with Outlook. (more information on RSS and Outlook 2003 or older).
  • Mozilla Firefox shows RSS Feed in Firefox in the lower right corner of the browser when it detects an RSS feed on the web page. Simply click it to add the RSS feed to the built in RSS reader (the built in RSS reader has minimal options), they are referred to as "Live Bookmarks". You may also right click on RSS Feed and choose "Copy Link Location" and paste it into your RSS reader software.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - Setup a new account for "RSS News & Blogs". Follow the onscreen instructions and paste the "CGIRB Forms" RSS feed URL into "Feed URL" when you Add a new News Feed. Check the properties of the feed and set to "Check this folder for new messages".
  • Apple OS X Safari shows RSS Feed in Safari in the address bar of the browser when it detects an RSS feed on the web page. Simply click RSS Feed and Safari will display the RSS feed and options for it.
  • Google Home Page allows you to add an RSS feed. Login to your Google Home Page, click "Add more to this page" at the top left of the page. Next to the "Search Homepage Content" button, click the "Add by URL" link. Paste the "CGIRB Forms" RSS feed URL into that form field and click "Add". You will have results within about 5 minutes.
